Peyronies Disease
What is Peyronie’s disease?
Peyronie’s disease (PD) is a connective tissue disorder which can result in penile deformity such as penile curvature and shortening.
Plaques (segments of flat scar tissue) form under the skin of the penis. These plaques can cause the penis to bend or become indented during erections. The plaques can often, but not always, be felt through the skin and may cause pain.
It can be caused by trauma, you may of heard people talk about a "broken penis" that when healed had a deformity, or it can occur for no obvious reason.
A definitive reason why this occurs when no trauma is involved is not available, but theories include loss of spontaneous erection and therefore atrophy and scaring of the penis tissues may be the cause or that it is a genetic condition. Most likely one or all these cause Peyronie’s.
The important thing to know is treatment is available so seek help from a health professional with knowledge in this area. Treatments range from exercise (with a pump or traction device), oral medication to surgery depending on severity and stage that the person presents with the disease.
The important thing to note is that the earlier you seek help, the better the outcome.

How common is it?
The prevalence of diagnosed PD has been estimated to be 0.5% in adult males. PD is thought to happen in about 6 out of 100 men between the ages of 40 and 70. It’s rarer in young men but does occur. The incidence of PD increases after prostate cancer treatment, however studies vary in statistics. It is important to note that penile rehabilitation programs can reduce the risk post prostate cancer treatment.
The number of cases may be higher than the estimates because many men may be embarrassed and choose not to see their health care provider.
Diagnosis
Peyronie’s Disease diagnosis is based on medical history, symptomatology and identification of penile plaque by palpation.
In some instances, imaging (penile duplex ultrasound) can also be used to identify the site and characteristics of the plaque and to guide treatment.
